A loafer decides how the rest of the outfit reads. Worn with tailored trousers it makes the day look considered; worn with rolled chinos and no socks it looks like you never thought about it at all. Both readings come from the same pair, which is the argument for owning one.

Cut close to the classic

An apron seam across the toe, a penny keeper across the vamp, a low stacked heel, and a contrast tan lining through the footbed. Nothing on the outside announces a brand. The shape does the talking — which is the whole point of a shoe you intend to keep rather than replace.

Sizes run on the European scale, on a standard-width last. The size guide beside the colours converts every size to UK, US and foot length in centimetres.

The fastest way to be right: measure your foot, do not guess from the size you usually buy. Heel to longest toe, in the evening, both feet — brands disagree with each other, a ruler does not.

Caught between two sizes, take the larger. A slip-on has no laces to take up slack, so it should hold the heel without pinching the widest part of the foot. Half a size short stays short.

Wide feet: take the larger size. The vamp stretches slightly with wear, but the shoe never grows in length.

Shipping. Standard tracked delivery is free on every order, with no minimum, anywhere we ship. Express is EUR 7.90 and moves your parcel to the front of the queue.

Orders leave the warehouse within two business days. Tracking arrives by email the moment the label is printed. Delivery then takes 5 to 9 business days in Europe and 7 to 14 elsewhere.

Returns. You have 30 days from delivery. The pair comes back unworn — try them on a carpet, not on the street — with the box and packaging. Write to support@varentti.com with your order number and we send the return address the same day.

Return postage is on you unless the pair arrived faulty or we sent the wrong item. Once the parcel is back and checked, the refund reaches your original payment method in 5 to 10 business days.

Smooth leather. Wipe the dust off with a dry cloth after each wear. Every few weeks, work a neutral cream polish in with a soft cloth, let it sit for ten minutes, then buff. Cream feeds the leather; wax only shines it.

Suede and nubuck. Never use water or polish. Brush the nap back with a crepe or brass suede brush, always in one direction. Spray a suede protector before the first wear and again after heavy rain.

After rain. Stuff the shoe with newspaper and let it dry at room temperature, away from a radiator. Heat cracks leather and stiffens the sole.

Between wears. Use cedar shoe trees and give each pair a day off. Rotating two pairs makes both last far longer than wearing one every day — which is the honest reason the second pair is half price.
